The Lifting Index is calculated by dividing the weight of the load lifted by the Recommended Weight Limit. NIOSH has established the following guidelines:
- Lifting Index of 1.00 or less is acceptable.
- Lifting Index of greater than 1.00 up to 3.00 indicates a need for task and/or administrative changes.
- Lifting Index of greater than 3.00 is unacceptably hazardous, and engineering changes are required.
